Social Impact

Social Impact is an Art-Label, situated in Linz, Austria. Founded in 1997, we are dealing primarily with areas of social tensions and the socio-political conflicts behind them. The most recent projects addresses the spatial, social and economic frames of action of marginal groups.

One of our primary goals is to ensure participation for the target group – and also to build up communication-lines with social groups which are not commonly adressed by art projects.

The working methods are derived from art and action research. We distinguish projects with sociological parts and interactions and research. Short Descritpions of recent projects can illustrate the different approaches and methods we use:

# E55 /// On the Situation of Sex Workers Along the E55 (05/2004 – 06/2005)
Following extensive interviews with sex workers working along the Europa Highway 55 near the Austrian and German border, a language course will be developed together with the sex workers and criminal psychologists with self-protection phrases for highway prostitutes. The language course will be published as a brochure and as a CD and will be distributed to the sex workers free of charge.

# Agency no_milk///no_honey (09/2003 – in progress)
The "agency no milk /// no honey" is intended to support the Austrian Ministry of the Interior in its endeavors to prevent potential refugees in potential refugee countries from seeking refuge in Austria. The aim of the agency is to provide information about the situations that people from other countries can expect in Austria: "correct" deportation (death of Marcus O.), "correct" medical care (death of Cheibani W.), and "correct" execution of official duties (shooting of Imre B.), in order to correct the image production of the "European Cultural Capital Graz 2003". Part 2 of the project is devoted to the production of articles of use for tourists, such as beach towels, swim wear, air mattresses, etc. These articles are printed with information on the killing of foreign citizens by police and offered for sale beginning in summer 2004.

# wahl///VER///sprecher (promises, promises) (01-09/2003)
With the rising flood of information in the age of media, messages once delivered are more and more quickly forgotten. Politicians profit from this mechanism. Statements made in election campaigns in the past no longer have to face an evaluation. This is especially the case in Upper Austria, the Federal Province with the longest legislature period in Austria, all of six years. "wahl///VER///sprecher" calls attention again to statements made by the parliamentary parties in 1997, via Internet and through 28,000 printed plastic bags, which will be given away prior to the Provincial Parliament elections in 2003. In this way, "wahl///VER///sprecher" creates a context for evaluating political statements in 2003 and makes it possible to examine the credibility of the political campaigns and the way they are staged in the media.

# border rescue (06/2002 – in progress)
The pressure of migration is rising – Europe is sealing its borders to the outside. More and more refugees die in the course of dangerous attempts to immigrate. Prior to the June 2002 EU summit meeting in Seville, at which heads of state and government conferred on the deployment of troops to stop refugees, Social Impact investigated safe immigration routes along the Czech-Austrian border and published this information on the Internet. Handy guides featuring suggested immigration routes can be printed out, and the site also offers information on the asylum situation in Austria and other European countries, cases of death on the EU´s outer border as well as general tips on immigration and aid for those fleeing.
