Ondrej Brody& Kristofer Paetau present a living sculpture in their booth at the Subversiv Messe in Linz 2009.
They present their loving pet "Marcel", an African Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus) in a golden cage. It is widely believed in the parrot-keeping community that African Grey Parrots understand their human companions at various human intelligence levels. For example, some believe that a young African Grey Parrot (under a year) has the equivalent understanding of a 6-year-old human child in its cognitive ability.
It is expected that Marcel will a perform a short and heart breaking speech in the booth throughout the Subversive Messe: „LET ME OUT!!!“ - Thus addressing a direct request to the visitors of the fair and making an in-direct ‚site-specific’ comment on ‚subversion in a golden cage’. The parrot yawl-speech will be omnipresent at the fair and confronting the visitors with an exotic pet crying for freedom.
Exoticism is a trend in art, design, film and in the cultural industry generally. It is a representation of one culture for the consumption by another. Within the frame of Subversiv Messe we also propose to give a lecture about ‚Exotic Subversion’ within the context of contemporary art and cultural production in general.
